There are various methods to retrieve your previous-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), with a preferred method and alternative methods available:
Preferred method:
- Retain a Copy of Your Tax Return: It’s always a good practice to keep a copy of your tax return. On your 2022 tax return, your AGI can be found on line 11 of Form 1040. If you’re awaiting the processing of your 2022 tax return, enter $0 as your prior-year AGI to ensure your 2023 tax return is accepted by the IRS for processing.
- Obtain Copy from Paid Preparer: If you used a paid preparer last year, you might obtain a copy of your previous year’s tax return from them.
- Access Previous-Year Tax Preparation Software: If you’re using the same tax preparation software as last year, it likely has your prior-year tax return for you to access. Even if you’ve switched software, you might still be able to access your previous-year return electronically.
Alternative methods:
If you don’t have a copy of your tax return, you can use one of the IRS self-service tools:
- Online Account: Utilize your online IRS account to immediately view your AGI on the Tax Records tab. If you’re a new user, ensure you have your photo identification ready.
- Get Transcript by Mail: You can request a transcript by mail by calling the automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946. Please anticipate 5 to 10 days for delivery.
